Digital citizenship refers to the ability of learners to participate in a safe, critical, responsible, and effective manner in the digital world. Check out Teach Thought’s Definition of Digital Citizenship which provides more information on the topic. The major goal of teachers is to provide learners with skills that can help them to make the best use of digital technologies. Although the current generation of learners can effectively interact with various digital devices, tools, and media, most lack skills on how to utilize social media beyond communicating with friends.
Digital citizenship aims at developing crucial knowledge and skills among learners that can enable them to utilize digital media for personal development. This involves developing their skills and knowledge on various facets such as content development, writing, web design, social media, and responsible use of digital technologies. For further information, visit Common Sense Education’s Presentation: Creating a culture of digital citizenship. There are also efforts to teach children about internet safety and the ever-increasing incidences of cyber bullying.
Teaching youth on digital technologies will help them in learning to take responsibility of their actions in the digital space. It will also help in improving their ability to reflect critically when making use of the digital media.
